Have you looked at the shops lately? Religious jewellery is having a major moment in fashion, with crosses, hamsa hands, Day Of The Dead skulls and evil eyes adorning necklaces, bracelets and earrings of all kinds. This isn’t your communion cross necklace from Peoples. The pieces are colourful and bejewelled with a definite edge, which makes a gal covet them oh-so-badly. Despite that, a moral dilemma nags my spiritual conscience, questioning whether it’s tacky to rock a religious bauble just because it’s pretty, or should they be left to people who can at least recite one passage from the Bible? If you stack multiple meanings like arm candy, is it downright sacrilegious? Can you do no wrong if your only intention was to love the pieces for what they are, while respecting everyone’s freedom to individual faith? Am I over-thinking this? Serenity now!
