She Wears the Pants

2008/2009 brought us the boyfriend blazer in every style, cut, colour and fabrication imaginable. This year, we’ll be borrowing from the boys (again) but shifting focus to the lower half, with the re-introduction of the menswear trouser. Already huge in Europe (what isn’t?) the menswear trouser is this season’s answer to last season’s boyfriend blazer.
First spotted sparingly last season, the menswear trouser is back in full force for Spring. What makes this menswear trouser different is that it’s not just styled to look masculine, but the fit is far more relaxed. The key to this look is to put your fragile ego aside (I’m a 6 dammit!!) and buy the pant 1 or 2 sizes larger than you usually wear. By sizing up, you ensure that the pant skims off the body and glides effortlessly with your every movement, because nothing says “Dude looks like a Lady” louder than strained pleats on full hips. Also, after so many seasons of buying skinnies (jeans, pants, leggings, lattes) the urge to go super-skinny near the ankle is almost impossible to resist. To avoid looking like a sausage, I beg you to resist temptation and go cuffed or relaxed-straight, as it’s the most flattering cut.

Pleated-Skinny Pant: This Dreamgirl's worst nightmare
